The material for latex gloves originates as a milky fluid harvested from the Hevea brasiliensis tree, commonly known as the rubber tree. Harvesters collect this natural rubber latex by tapping the tree, where a small cut is made in the bark to allow the sap to drip into collection cups. This raw latex is stabilized and compounded with chemicals to enhance its strength and elasticity.
Manufacturing uses a dipping process where hand-shaped molds, called formers, are immersed into the liquid latex compound. The gloves are then leached to remove excess proteins and chemicals, and cured with heat to vulcanize the rubber, making the material durable and tear-resistant. Some gloves are coated with cornstarch powder to make them easier to don and remove. Powder-free gloves are treated differently, often through a chlorination wash, to reduce the transfer of latex protein particles.
Primary Uses and Performance Characteristics
Latex gloves are frequently selected for tasks demanding precision due to their superior tactile sensitivity and fit. The material’s natural elasticity allows it to conform closely to the hand, creating a “second skin” feel that maximizes dexterity. Understanding Latex Allergies and Non-Latex Alternatives
Despite their performance benefits, natural rubber latex contains proteins that can trigger an immune response in some individuals, leading to a condition known as latex allergy. The most serious reaction is a Type I hypersensitivity, which is an immediate response to these proteins. Symptoms range from localized skin reactions, such as hives and itching, to severe systemic responses like difficulty breathing and potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis.

Vinyl Gloves
Vinyl gloves, made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), are generally the most economical option and are suitable for low-risk, short-duration tasks, such as basic food service or cleaning. However, vinyl provides a looser fit and a lower level of protection and durability compared to both latex and nitrile.
