Its fibers converge as they extend downwards towards the hip, blending with those of the psoas major muscle. This combined structure then inserts onto the lesser trochanter of the femur, a bony prominence on the upper inner thigh bone.

The iliac muscles, as part of the iliopsoas complex, are recognized as the strongest flexors of the hip joint. This means they are primarily responsible for movements that bring the knee towards the chest, a motion known as hip flexion. When the lower limbs are fixed, the iliopsoas can assist in bending the trunk forward, as seen when sitting up from a lying position.
