Common Ground-Nesting Bees

Each lateral tunnel terminates in a single cell, where the female bee deposits an egg with pollen and nectar for the developing larva. While most ground-nesting bees are solitary, meaning each female constructs and provisions her own nest independently, their presence can sometimes appear communal. This occurs when multiple solitary females nest in close proximity, creating a visible aggregation of small burrows. However, these individuals do not cooperate in raising their young, distinguishing them from truly social species like some bumblebees, which form colonies with a queen and workers.
Interaction and Importance
Ground-nesting bees are non-aggressive insects and pose minimal threat to humans. Unlike social bees that defend a large communal hive, most ground nesters are solitary and focused on provisioning individual nests. A female bee will typically only sting if she feels directly threatened, such as being stepped on or squeezed. Even then, their sting is usually mild and less potent than that of more aggressive social insects like yellow jackets.
