What Are Green Ants? Facts About This Unique Species

Green ants, scientifically known as Oecophylla smaragdina, are often called weaver ants or green tree ants. These insects are recognized for their distinctive appearance and complex social behaviors. They build remarkable nests high in the trees of tropical environments and play a significant role in their ecosystems.

Distinctive Features of Green Ants

Oecophylla smaragdina is commonly identified by its vibrant green abdomen, though the head and thorax can often be reddish-brown or orange, particularly in Australian specimens. Workers typically measure between 5 and 10 millimeters in length, with major workers reaching the larger end of this range at 8-10 millimeters. Queens are considerably larger, growing to about 20-25 millimeters.

These ants possess 12-segmented antennae and large, convex eyes. Their slender body features a gaster, or abdomen, which is a distinguishing feature as it can reflect over their mesosoma.

Geographic Distribution and Habitat

Green ants are native to tropical and subtropical regions across Asia and Australia. Their range extends from India through Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia and the Philippines, reaching northern Australia. In Australia, they are found in tropical coastal areas, stretching as far south as Broome in Western Australia and Yeppoon in Queensland, and throughout the Northern Territory.

These ants are obligate arboreal dwellers, meaning they exclusively live in trees. Their preferred habitats include the foliage of trees and shrubs found in rainforests, open woodlands, and even urban gardens. Colonies construct their homes within the canopy, often spanning multiple trees.

Understanding Green Ant Colonies and Behavior

Green ant colonies exhibit a complex social structure with a clear division of labor, operating as a cohesive unit. While colonies typically have a single queen, they can become very large, sometimes comprising more than a hundred nests across numerous trees and containing over half a million workers. Worker ants are responsible for various tasks, including foraging for food, defending the colony, and caring for the young.

They construct nests by weaving living leaves together using silk produced by their own larvae. Workers pull the edges of leaves together, forming chains with their bodies to bridge gaps, while other workers carry larvae to secrete silken threads that bind the leaves. This process creates a secure, waterproof home for the colony.

Green ants are effective predators, primarily feeding on small insects such as beetles, flies, and other hymenopterans. They also supplement their diet by “farming” sap-sucking insects like aphids and scale insects for their sugary excretions, known as honeydew. When threatened, green ants are highly territorial and will aggressively defend their nests. They do not sting but deliver a painful bite, often followed by spraying formic acid into the wound, which causes intense discomfort.

Ecological Role and Human Interaction

Green ants serve as natural pest controllers within their habitats. They prey on a wide range of agricultural pests, making them beneficial in controlling insect populations that could otherwise damage crops and trees. Their predatory activity helps maintain ecosystem balance.

Beyond their ecological contributions, green ants have traditional uses among indigenous populations. The white larvae found within their nests are consumed, noted for their lemon-like taste and high content of protein and Vitamin C. Green ants are also used in traditional medicine, where they are prepared as teas or inhaled to alleviate symptoms of colds, headaches, and sore throats.

While their ecological benefits are clear, human interaction with green ants can be challenging due to their defensive behaviors. Their painful bites and the formic acid they spray can be a nuisance, especially in residential areas or gardens. Despite this, their role as biological control agents highlights their positive environmental impact.
