Gophers are often perceived as garden pests due to their burrowing habits and consumption of plants. While their activities can be a nuisance in agricultural or landscaped areas, these subterranean rodents play significant roles within various ecosystems. Gophers are considered “ecosystem engineers” because their presence and activities substantially impact their environment, influencing soil structure, plant diversity, and providing habitats for other organisms. Gophers’ Role in Soil Health

Gophers’ extensive tunneling activities directly enhance soil structure and health. This aeration is especially beneficial in areas like agricultural land where compaction might occur from livestock or machinery. Gopher tunnels also improve water infiltration, reducing surface runoff and promoting groundwater recharge. These tunnels can temporarily hold water, preventing erosion and the loss of topsoil.

Their burrowing physically mixes different soil horizons, bringing subsoil closer to the surface and improving overall soil texture. This mixing process breaks up hardpan layers, making it easier for plant roots to penetrate deeper and access water and nutrients.
