The gardenia belongs to the genus Gardenia, which is part of the Rubiaceae family, commonly known as the coffee family. This evergreen shrub is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, specifically originating in areas like southern China and Japan.

The physical appearance of the gardenia is characterized by its thick, leathery, dark green leaves that possess a distinct glossy sheen. The flowers are typically a creamy white color, often having a waxy texture and a structure resembling a rose, which may be single or double-petaled depending on the cultivar. The plant’s most notable characteristic is the powerful, sweet scent produced by its blooms, which is particularly noticeable during the cooler parts of the day.

Gardenias have low-severity poisonous characteristics due to compounds like geniposide. While not dangerous to humans, ingestion of any part of the Gardenia jasminoides species can cause mild gastrointestinal distress in animals. Pet owners should exercise caution, as the plant is specifically considered toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.

Intense, direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves and cause flowers to fade quickly, so protection during the hottest hours is advisable.
