What Are Eagles Afraid Of? Natural & Human Threats

Eagles are powerful birds of prey. While adult eagles typically face few direct animal predators, their survival, territory, and offspring are subject to various challenges. Eagles respond to these threats with behaviors that enhance their survival and reproductive success. These challenges compel eagles to adapt and avoid situations that could compromise their well-being or lineage.

Natural Predators and Competitors

Their eggs, chicks, and fledglings are vulnerable to other animal species. Opportunistic mammals such as raccoons, black bears, and foxes raid nests, preying on eggs and young birds. Raccoons eat eagle eggs, and black bears, despite their size, are nimble climbers capable of scavenging eagle nests.

Larger birds also pose threats; great horned owls, ravens, and gulls may prey on young eagles or steal eggs. Ravens focus on eggs, but also target young or injured eagles. Black-billed magpies also consume eggs and chicks.

Competition for food sources can affect eagles, especially during times of scarcity. Eagles may engage in aggressive interactions with other raptors or scavengers over limited prey, with younger birds sometimes competing with older ones for food. This competition can lead to stress and reduced access to resources.

Human-Induced Threats

Human activities are a significant source of threats for eagles. Habitat loss and degradation, driven by development, deforestation, and agriculture, reduce available nesting sites and foraging areas. The loss of shoreline habitat is particularly detrimental for bald eagles, as it limits their preferred nest sites, roosting areas, and access to aquatic food sources.

Pollution also poses a risk, with lead poisoning a widespread concern. Eagles often ingest lead fragments from ammunition in animal carcasses or gut piles left by hunters, which can cause severe illness or death. A study found that nearly 50% of bald and golden eagles showed signs of repeated lead exposure, with higher doses leading to symptoms like neurological impairment and death.

Historically, pesticides like DDT had a significant impact on eagle populations by causing eggshell thinning and reproductive failure. Although DDT was banned in the United States in 1972, its effects contributed to a severe decline in eagle numbers. Direct persecution, including illegal shooting and trapping, also continues to threaten eagles, despite legal protections.

Human disturbance near nesting sites, such as from boating, hiking, or construction, can force eagles to abandon territories or alter their breeding success. While some eagles show tolerance to human activity, others are highly sensitive, especially during courtship and nest building, potentially leading to nest desertion.

Environmental Stressors

Eagles face various environmental stressors that challenge them. Extreme weather events, including severe storms, blizzards, and heatwaves, can impact nesting success and food availability. Such conditions can destroy nests, reduce prey accessibility, or directly threaten the survival of young eagles.

Food scarcity, often linked to ecosystem changes, overfishing, or droughts, can stress eagle populations. Declining salmon populations, for instance, have led eagles to seek food in alternative areas, including agricultural sites, highlighting their adaptability. Prolonged food deprivation can weaken an eagle’s immune system, making it more susceptible to diseases and impairing its ability to hunt effectively.

Diseases also pose a threat to eagle populations. West Nile Virus, for example, has been diagnosed in bald eagles and can be transmitted by mosquitoes or through infected prey. Avian Vacuolar Myelinopathy (AVM), linked to toxins from cyanobacteria in aquatic plants, has caused eagle mortality in some regions, leading to neurological issues. Other diseases like Aspergillosis, a fungal infection, can also affect eagles, particularly if their immune system is compromised.
