Home composting, which occurs at lower, ambient temperatures, may not provide the necessary conditions for many industrially compostable bags to decompose effectively.
Certification standards provide assurance that a bag meets specific criteria for compostability. In North America, the ASTM D6400 standard requires products to biodegrade by at least 90% within 180 days and disintegrate within 12 weeks in a commercial composting facility, without producing toxic residues.
