The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a unique amphibian, known for its remarkable ability to retain its larval features into adulthood, a phenomenon called neoteny. It is exclusively native to the ancient lake system of Xochimilco and its associated canals, located near Mexico City. Natural Predators in the Wild

In their native aquatic environment, axolotls historically had limited natural predators. Beyond direct predation, the axolotl’s decline links to habitat degradation from human activity. Mexico City’s rapid urbanization has led to the draining of much of the historical lake system, reducing Lake Xochimilco to a network of canals. This habitat loss fragments axolotl populations, pushing them into smaller, isolated areas. Pollution from agricultural runoff, industrial waste, and untreated sewage further compromises Lake Xochimilco’s water quality, and axolotls are sensitive to these pollutants, hindering their competition with invasive fish. Conservation challenges are substantial, primarily due to ongoing habitat destruction and invasive species.
