Animals Known for Their Large Eyes

Their eyeballs can be as large as their brain, allowing them exceptional night vision for hunting insects. Similarly, owls, as nocturnal predators, have large, tube-shaped eyes highly efficient at collecting light, granting superior night vision.

In the deep ocean, creatures like the colossal squid have evolved enormous eyes. Measuring up to 27 centimeters (11 inches) in diameter, these are the largest eyes of any known animal, living or extinct. These massive eyes help them detect faint bioluminescence from prey or light disturbances caused by large predators. Another deep-sea inhabitant, the barreleye fish, possesses unique tubular eyes that point upwards through its transparent head to spot prey silhouettes.

Large eyes are also present in animals that rely on keen vision for hunting in brighter conditions. Eagles and hawks are known for their exceptional visual acuity, enabling them to spot prey from great distances, sometimes up to 3 kilometers away. The absolute size of their eyes and high density of photoreceptor cells contribute to their “eagle eye” vision. Dragonflies, with their vast compound eyes covering most of their head, possess thousands of individual light-sensing units that provide a wide field of view and acute motion detection crucial for their predatory lifestyle.

The optical benefits of large eyes are similar to those governing cameras and telescopes. A larger eye acts like a camera with a wider aperture, allowing more light to enter and reach the retina. This increased light intake is advantageous in low-light environments, improving clarity and brightness.

This expanded surface accommodates a higher density of photoreceptor cells, such as rods and cones, improving visual resolution and the ability to detect finer details.
