The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the world’s largest lizard, acts as an apex predator on a few Indonesian islands, ambushing prey and delivering venomous bites.
In marine environments, the orca (Orcinus orca), also known as the killer whale, is a formidable apex predator found in all oceans. These highly intelligent and cooperative hunters prey on a diverse range of marine life, including seals, other whales, and even great white sharks. Their return helped control elk populations, which had previously overgrazed aspen and willow trees, leading to the recovery of plant life and associated species.
