What Animal Stays Pregnant the Longest?

The duration an animal carries its young, known as the gestation period, varies considerably across the animal kingdom. Rhinoceros species also experience lengthy pregnancies, ranging from 15 to 18 months. White rhinos have a gestation period of about 16 to 18 months. Their calves weigh over 100 pounds at birth and are capable of walking within an hour. Giraffes, with their towering height, carry their young for approximately 15 months. Newborn giraffes are already quite tall, standing around 6 feet (1.8 meters) and weighing 50-70 kg, and can stand and walk within hours of being born.

Camels have extended pregnancies, lasting between 13 and 15 months. This allows their offspring to develop sufficiently to withstand the challenging conditions of their desert habitats.
