The Evolutionary Purpose of Large Ears

The primary role is thermoregulation, the process of maintaining a stable internal body temperature. The ears are relatively thin and contain an extensive network of superficial blood vessels close to the skin’s surface. When the elephant is too hot, blood is circulated into these vessels, transferring heat from the core body to the air outside. The large surface area acts like a natural radiator, allowing the excess heat to dissipate efficiently. Flapping the ears generates a slight breeze, which accelerates this evaporative cooling process. The secondary function is to enhance sound gathering and communication. Elephants use low-frequency sounds, known as infrasound, to communicate over distances of several kilometers, and the size of the ears helps them to capture these subtle sound waves.

While the African Bush Elephant holds the record for absolute size, the Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda) is the definitive winner when considering proportionality to body mass.
