This natural process usually begins with changes in the menstrual cycle, known as perimenopause, which can last for several years.
Numerous factors can influence when menopause occurs. Genetic predisposition plays a significant role, with studies suggesting that approximately 50% of the variation in menopause age is inherited. Lifestyle choices also contribute, as smoking is consistently associated with an earlier onset of menopause, potentially by 1-2 years. Body Mass Index (BMI) can also affect timing, with a higher BMI sometimes linked to later menopause.
Medical interventions and health conditions can additionally impact the age of menopause. Certain treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or surgical removal of both ovaries, can induce menopause. Defining Late Menopause
Late menopause is defined as the onset of menopause after the age of 55. This definition is based on statistical averages. While most women experience menopause between 45 and 55 years old, reaching it after 55 is considered outside the typical range.
Late menopause differs from perimenopause. Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, characterized by fluctuating hormone levels and irregular periods. Late menopause refers to the permanent cessation of menstrual periods at an older age, specifically after the 12-month mark without menstruation.
Health Implications of Late Menopause
Experiencing menopause at a later age has advantages and disadvantages due to the prolonged exposure to natural estrogen. One notable benefit is extended protection against osteoporosis. Estrogen helps maintain bone density, so a longer duration of its presence can reduce the risk of this bone-weakening condition and related fractures.
Furthermore, a later onset of menopause is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Estrogen provides a protective effect on the heart and blood vessels, leading to healthier vascular function and a lower likelihood of heart attacks and strokes in postmenopausal years. Research indicates that women who experience menopause later may also have a slightly longer life expectancy.
Conversely, the extended lifetime exposure to estrogen associated with late menopause can slightly increase the risk of certain hormone-sensitive cancers. This includes breast cancer and endometrial (uterine) cancer. For instance, the risk of breast cancer may increase by approximately 3% for each year menopause is delayed after age 55. Similarly, the risk of endometrial cancer can increase significantly for women whose menopause occurs after 46.5 years of age.
