Viscotears Gel is a treatment for dry eye symptoms. As a form of artificial tear, it lubricates the eye’s surface to offer relief from soreness, burning, and irritation. The gel provides a hydrating layer when eyes do not produce enough natural tears to remain comfortably moist.
Function and Composition
Viscotears’ primary active ingredient is carbomer, a synthetic polymer. When applied, carbomer forms a transparent, viscous film that adheres to the cornea and conjunctiva, which helps stabilize the natural tear film. The gel’s consistency is thicker than standard liquid eye drops.
This thicker formulation allows the gel to remain on the eye’s surface longer. This prolonged contact time sustains the lubricating effect, reducing the need for frequent reapplication compared to more fluid solutions.
Application Instructions
Before handling the product, wash your hands thoroughly. To apply the gel, tilt your head back and gently pull the lower eyelid downward, creating a small pocket.
Position the tube vertically above the eye, taking care not to let the nozzle tip make contact with your eye or any other surface. Squeeze the tube to release one small drop into the pocket. After the drop is in, close your eye and blink several times to spread the gel evenly across the eye’s surface.
If you use other eye medication, wait at least five to fifteen minutes after applying Viscotears before administering any other drops. This waiting period prevents the gel from interfering with the absorption of the other medication. Viscotears should be the last product applied.
Potential Reactions and Safety Information
Immediately following application, it is common to experience temporary blurred vision. Some users also notice a mild and brief stinging sensation. If you experience persistent eye pain, changes in vision, or signs of an allergic reaction such as a rash or swelling, stop using the product and consult a healthcare provider.
Follow these safety precautions when using this product:
- Remove soft contact lenses before using the gel, as the preservative cetrimide can discolor them; wait at least 15 to 30 minutes before reinserting them.
- Wait until the temporary blurriness clears before driving or operating machinery.
- Do not share the tube with others to prevent contamination.
- Discard the tube 28 days after it is first opened.
