Urea, being far less toxic than ammonia, serves as a safe vehicle for nitrogen excretion. Once formed in the liver, urea travels through the bloodstream to the kidneys. The kidneys then filter urea from the blood, concentrating it in urine for elimination. This process maintains nitrogen balance and prevents the buildup of harmful ammonia.

Urea is a widely used nitrogen fertilizer, providing an efficient source of this nutrient for plant growth. It contains about 46% nitrogen by weight, making it one of the most concentrated nitrogen fertilizers available. When applied to soil, urea undergoes a conversion process catalyzed by the enzyme urease, which is naturally present in soil. This enzyme hydrolyzes urea into ammonium and carbon dioxide.

The ammonium ions are then converted by soil bacteria into nitrates, a form of nitrogen readily absorbed by plant roots. This sustained release of nitrogen supports plant development, enhancing crop yields. Its high nitrogen content and ease of handling contribute to its popularity among farmers globally.

Beyond biological and agricultural roles, ureas find applications in various everyday products and industrial processes. In skincare, urea is valued for its humectant properties, meaning it can attract and hold moisture from the environment. This makes it an effective moisturizing agent in creams, lotions, and oint, helping to hydrate and soften dry skin. It also aids in exfoliating dead skin cells, promoting smoother skin texture.

Industrially, ureas are foundational in the production of thermosetting plastics, notably urea-formaldehyde resins. These resins are formed by reacting urea with formaldehyde and are widely used as adhesives in wood products like particleboard and plywood due to their strong bonding capabilities. They also serve as binders in various composite materials and as components in durable coatings and insulation foams. This versatility highlights the broad impact of ureas on manufactured goods.
