Paddle plants are succulents in the Kalanchoe genus, known for their flat, paddle-like leaves. They form rosettes, displaying striking colors in sunlight. Popular among houseplant enthusiasts, they are valued for ornamental appeal and straightforward care.
The Main Paddle Plant Species
The two main paddle plant species, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora and Kalanchoe luciae, originate from Southern Africa’s arid environments. They grow as a basal rosette of broad, fleshy leaves.
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora forms a compact, upright rosette. Kalanchoe luciae grows in a rosette with fanning leaves. Though similar, differences become apparent. Both store water in their thick leaves.
Distinguishing Between the Species
Distinguishing Kalanchoe thyrsiflora from Kalanchoe luciae is challenging, but distinct features exist. A primary distinguishing factor is the powdery white coating, farina, on Kalanchoe thyrsiflora leaves. This waxy layer is absent or less pronounced on Kalanchoe luciae leaves, which are smoother.
Leaf coloration in direct sunlight is another indicator: Kalanchoe luciae develops vibrant red margins on its leaves, spreading across the surface in strong light. In contrast, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora may show pinkish or yellowish tones on its leaf edges, but rarely the intense red blush of K. luciae.
Flowering characteristics also distinguish them: Kalanchoe thyrsiflora produces tall stalks with clusters of yellow, urn-shaped flowers. Kalanchoe luciae develops stalks with white to pale yellow blooms, and a more branched, elongated inflorescence.
Common Paddle Plant Cultivars
Kalanchoe luciae ‘Flapjack’ is a widely recognized and popular paddle plant cultivar, sought for its vibrant coloration. ‘Flapjack’ displays more intense and widespread red margins than the wild form, especially in bright light.
Its enhanced red blush makes it a favored choice for succulent collections and arid gardens. It maintains the flat, paddle-like leaf shape. Its robust nature and striking appearance contribute to its broad appeal.
Other Related Kalanchoe Species
While Kalanchoe thyrsiflora and Kalanchoe luciae are the most recognized paddle plants, other Kalanchoe species like Kalanchoe tetraphylla are sometimes mistaken for them due to similar leaf structures, as K. tetraphylla also forms large, flat leaves in a rosette. However, K. tetraphylla grows larger and more robustly than common paddle plants.
Kalanchoe tetraphylla leaves are more uniformly green, lacking the distinct red margins or farina of K. luciae or K. thyrsiflora. Its growth habit can be more sprawling as it matures, differentiating it from the more compact rosettes of true paddle plants. These distinctions help in accurate identification within the diverse Kalanchoe genus.
