Robo Fish Battery: How to Change and Maintain It

Robo Fish are small, water-activated toys that mimic the swimming patterns of real fish. These robotic toys provide entertainment as they navigate through water, powered by small internal batteries. Understanding the function and maintenance of these batteries is a common concern for users.

Robo Fish Battery Basics

The power for a Robo Fish is supplied by button cell batteries. Most models use two 1.5-volt alkaline batteries, with the most common type being the LR44, also known by designations such as AG13 or A76. These are single-use batteries and are not designed to be recharged. The operational lifespan of a set of batteries will vary based on usage patterns.

Continuous operation will deplete the batteries more quickly than intermittent use. A fresh set of LR44 batteries can provide several hours of playtime, but this duration diminishes with every use. When the fish’s movements become sluggish or stop, it is a clear sign that the batteries are nearing the end of their functional life.

Changing Your Robo Fish Battery

Replacing the batteries in a Robo Fish is a straightforward process that requires care. Before starting, it is important to thoroughly dry the toy to prevent any moisture from contacting the new batteries or the internal electronics. The battery compartment is secured by a small screw, which will require a crosshead screwdriver for removal. An adult should always perform this task.

Once the screw is loosened by turning it counter-clockwise, the battery door can be opened. Inside, you will see the old batteries. Take note of their orientation before removing them, as the polarity, indicated by “+” and “-” symbols, is important for correct function. The flat side of an LR44 battery is the positive (+) side, while the slightly raised side is the negative (-).

After removing the old batteries, insert the new ones, making sure they match the polarity markings within the compartment. Ensure the rubber seal on the battery door is correctly positioned to maintain a waterproof seal. Securely fasten the door by tightening the screw in a clockwise motion, being careful not to overtighten. Replacement LR44 batteries are widely available at electronics stores, supermarkets, and online retailers.

Robo Fish Battery Maintenance and Safety

Proper handling of button cell batteries is a safety consideration, particularly in households with small children or pets. Due to their small size, LR44 batteries are a swallowing hazard and must be kept out of reach. New batteries should be stored in their original packaging in a cool, dry place, away from metal objects that could cause them to short-circuit.

When batteries are depleted, they should be removed from the toy promptly. Proper disposal is also important for environmental reasons. Used batteries should not be discarded in regular household trash, as they can leak harmful chemicals. Instead, they should be taken to a designated battery recycling center or collection point.

If water ever enters the battery compartment, act quickly. Remove the batteries immediately and thoroughly dry the inside of the compartment with a soft cloth. Allow the toy and its components to air-dry completely before attempting to install new batteries. This prevents corrosion and potential damage to the toy’s circuitry.
