Interpreting RCT Results and Limitations
After data collection, RCT results are analyzed using statistical methods to determine if observed differences between groups are likely due to the intervention or random chance. Researchers typically look for “statistical significance,” often indicated by a p-value below 0.05, suggesting findings are unlikely to be random. A narrower confidence interval around an effect estimate indicates greater precision.
Statistical significance does not always equate to practical or clinical importance. A statistically significant effect might be very small and not meaningful in a real-world setting, or its benefits might be outweighed by side effects or costs. It is important to consider both the statistical findings and the magnitude of the effect in the context of patient outcomes and feasibility.
Despite their strengths, RCTs have inherent limitations. Conducting them can be expensive and time-consuming, sometimes requiring large sample sizes and extended follow-up to detect meaningful effects. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria used to select participants can limit generalizability. This means the specific population studied might not fully represent the broader patient population, potentially affecting how applicable results are to diverse groups in clinical practice.
Some research questions cannot be addressed through an RCT due to ethical considerations. For instance, it would be unethical to withhold a known effective treatment from a control group if it would cause harm, or to randomize participants to a potentially harmful exposure. In such cases, alternative study designs are necessary, acknowledging that no single study type can answer all questions.
