The liver in rabbits is a large organ located in the abdomen, divided into several lobes. It is involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions that maintain the rabbit’s health. This organ processes nutrients, metabolizes sugars and fats, and stores substances like glycogen and various nutrients.

The liver also plays a central role in detoxification, breaking down harmful substances and waste products from the body. It produces bile, a yellowish-green fluid that aids in the digestion and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. Unlike many other mammals, rabbit bile primarily contains biliverdin, and they produce a large volume.

When the liver’s functions are compromised, it can lead to various conditions. One common manifestation is hepatic lipidosis, also known as fatty liver disease, where fat accumulates abnormally within liver cells. Another condition, cholangitis, involves inflammation of the bile ducts. These conditions disrupt the liver’s ability to perform its many roles, leading to a buildup of toxins and impaired nutrient processing, which negatively impacts the rabbit’s overall health.

Identifying Symptoms

Recognizing the signs of liver disease in rabbits can be challenging because their symptoms are often non-specific and subtle. Owners should observe for general signs of illness such as lethargy, a decrease in activity level, or a hunched posture. A rabbit might also exhibit anorexia, a sudden or gradual refusal to eat, which can quickly lead to serious complications like hepatic lipidosis.

Changes in droppings, such as a decline in the number and size of fecal pellets, indicate reduced food intake. Weight loss is another common sign, so regularly monitoring a rabbit’s body condition and weight is helpful. More specific signs related to liver dysfunction can include jaundice, a yellowish discoloration of the skin or whites of the eyes.

Abdominal distension or bloating might also be observed due to fluid accumulation or an enlarged liver. In advanced cases, neurological signs like seizures, disorientation, or an unsteady gait (ataxia) can occur due to the buildup of toxins that affect brain function. Excessive thirst can also be present.

Liver disease in rabbits can stem from various factors, with dietary issues being frequent contributors. A diet high in carbohydrates or fat, or low in fiber, can lead to hepatic lipidosis, especially in obese rabbits. Anorexia, or a refusal to eat, regardless of its underlying cause, can also trigger this condition as the body mobilizes fat stores, overwhelming the liver.

Toxins pose another significant risk. Aflatoxins, fungal substances found in moldy feed, are highly toxic to the liver and can cause severe illness or death. Certain medications, plant toxins, and heavy metals like lead can also induce liver damage.

Infections, including bacterial, viral, and parasitic agents, are also implicated. For instance, the parasite Eimeria stiedae can cause hepatic coccidiosis, particularly in young rabbits, leading to liver damage. Other microbial diseases like pasteurellosis or salmonellosis may also affect the liver.

Veterinarians employ several diagnostic tools to identify liver disease. A physical examination provides initial clues. Blood tests are commonly used to assess liver function, checking for elevated liver enzymes such as Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) and Gamma Glutamyltransferase (GGT). Elevations in GGT are considered highly specific for rabbit liver disease.

Blood tests may also evaluate bilirubin, bile acids, and serum albumin levels, as low albumin can indicate severe liver disease. Imaging techniques like ultrasound and X-rays can reveal changes in liver size, shape, or texture, and identify masses or fluid accumulation. In some cases, a liver biopsy may be performed to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

Treatment Options and Long-Term Care

Treatment for rabbit liver disease focuses on addressing the underlying cause and providing supportive care to aid liver function. If a poor diet is identified, dietary modifications are implemented, typically involving a high-fiber, low-fat diet to reduce the burden on the liver. Fluid therapy is often administered to combat dehydration and support circulation, which helps the liver’s metabolic processes.

Medications may include liver support supplements to promote liver cell regeneration and function, and antibiotics if a bacterial infection is diagnosed. Pain management is also considered to improve the rabbit’s comfort and encourage eating. Supportive care, such as syringe-feeding if the rabbit is anorexic, is important to ensure adequate nutrient intake and prevent further fat mobilization to the liver. Ongoing veterinary monitoring through follow-up blood tests and imaging helps assess the liver’s response to treatment and adjust the care plan as needed.

Long-term care involves consistent preventative measures to support overall liver health and minimize the risk of recurrence. Providing a species-appropriate diet rich in hay and controlled amounts of pellets and fresh vegetables helps prevent obesity and related liver issues. Environmental enrichment and stress reduction are also beneficial, as stress can contribute to various health problems. Regular veterinary check-ups allow for early detection of potential issues, ensuring that any emerging liver problems are identified and addressed promptly.
