Understanding Pukiawe
Pukiawe (Leptecophylla tameiameiae) is a versatile plant that can grow as a low, spreading shrub or an erect tree, reaching up to 15 feet tall. Its bark ranges from brown to black, exhibiting a rough texture on older stems, while younger twigs appear scaly and brown. The plant is recognized by its small, leathery leaves, typically 1/10 inch wide and 3/8 inch long. These narrow leaves are dark green on their upper surface and a lighter, often whitish-green, on the underside, displaying noticeable veins.
Its flowers are small and inconspicuous, appearing white and star-shaped with five points, roughly 1/8 inch in diameter. These blooms occur individually or in small clusters within the leaf axils. After flowering, the plant produces round, fleshy berries (drupes), approximately 1/4 inch in diameter. These berries are a defining feature, showcasing colors including white, pink, red, and bicolored variations. Each berry typically contains five to eight small, pale brown seeds.
Habitat and Distribution
Pukiawe is indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands and the Marquesas Islands. Within Hawaii, this adaptable plant is found on all major islands. It thrives across a wide elevation range, from 50 to over 10,000 feet above sea level.
Pukiawe is commonly observed in diverse environments, including open low-elevation forests, high-elevation wet forests, alpine shrublands, and bogs. It can also establish itself in windward coastal sites and on recent lava flows, showcasing its resilience. As a pioneer species, Pukiawe stabilizes disturbed ground and contributes biomass to build soils in desolate landscapes like bare lava plains.
Cultural and Ecological Significance
Pukiawe holds a cherished place in Hawaiian culture, interwoven with various traditional practices. Its vibrant berries and new leaves are highly valued for lei making. A dye from boiled and mashed berries was historically used to color tapa cloth, while other parts yielded brown and red dyes. The wood was also utilized in creating second-stage kapa beaters.
In ancient Hawaiian society, Pukiawe was associated with rituals. Smoke from burning Pukiawe was used by ali’i (Hawaiian nobility) in ceremonies to temporarily diminish their spiritual status, allowing them to interact more freely with commoners. Medicinally, ground Pukiawe leaves, often mixed with salt and water, were inhaled to alleviate congestion, headaches, and colds.
Ecologically, Pukiawe serves as a foundational species. Its abundant berries provide food for native birds, including the nēnē, aiding in seed dispersal. The flowers offer nectar, supporting native insect pollinators like the endemic yellow-faced bees. Pukiawe’s ability to stabilize ground and build soil in challenging environments, such as lava plains, underscores its role in ecosystem recovery and health.
Growing Pukiawe
Cultivating Pukiawe can be challenging from seed due to low germination rates and slow seedling growth. For successful propagation, fruit pulp must be removed, either by gently cracking the fruit or by breaking it up in water and straining away the pulp. Cleaned seeds should then soak in hot water for a few hours or room temperature water for 24 to 48 hours. A brief five-minute soak in 5% acetic acid (vinegar) is recommended, followed by thorough rinsing.
Plant treated seeds shallowly (1/8 to 1/2 inch deep) in a well-drained planting medium. A suitable mix includes three parts #2 perlite to one part Sunshine Mix #4, or one part peat, one part perlite, and one part cinder. Maintain consistent moisture and keep containers in a shaded area initially. After germination (one to six months with treatment), gradually accustom seedlings to full sun exposure.
Pukiawe prefers full sun to partial shade once established. While specific fertilization guidelines are not widely detailed, a balanced, slow-release fertilizer supports healthy growth in cultivated settings.
