The North Atlantic Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is one of the world’s most imperiled large whale species, facing extinction. With an estimated population of around 356 individuals as of 2019, the species has experienced a significant decline. Their survival is directly tied to the health and accessibility of their habitat. Understanding their annual habitat use is fundamental to effective conservation strategies.

Geographic Distribution and Seasonal Movements

North Atlantic Right Whales primarily inhabit the waters off the eastern coast of North America. They migrate seasonally between feeding and calving grounds. During spring, summer, and into fall, a significant portion of the population can be found in productive waters off New England and into Canadian waters, including areas like the Grand Manan and Roseway Basins.

These northern regions serve as important feeding and mating grounds for the whales. In fall, some migrate over 1,000 miles southward. They seek the shallow, coastal waters off the southeastern United States, specifically off South Carolina, Georgia, and northeastern Florida, which function as their calving grounds.

Critical Habitat Features

Certain marine environments are particularly suitable for North Atlantic Right Whales. Their primary food source is dense aggregations of copepods, especially Calanus finmarchicus, making areas with abundant copepod populations crucial feeding grounds.

These whales also prefer relatively shallow coastal waters, which provide a safe environment for different life stages. The warm, shallow depths of their calving grounds offer a protected setting for pregnant females to give birth and nurse their young. These features support the whales through their feeding, breeding, and rearing.

Major Threats Within Their Habitat

North Atlantic Right Whales face significant human-induced threats that contribute to their endangered status. Collisions with vessels, known as vessel strikes, represent a primary cause of mortality and serious injury for these whales. As they migrate through areas with high shipping traffic, the risk of such encounters increases.

Entanglement in fishing gear, including ropes and nets, poses another severe and widespread threat. Over 85% of the population has experienced entanglement, highlighting the pervasive nature of this danger in their feeding and migratory corridors. These entanglements can lead to severe injuries, starvation, and death.

Underwater noise pollution from shipping and other human activities also impacts their habitat, disrupting communication and navigation. Furthermore, climate change is emerging as a significant threat, altering ocean conditions, affecting their migratory patterns, and reducing the availability and distribution of their copepod prey. Changes in ocean circulation and water temperatures have directly impacted their foraging and habitat use.

Habitat-Based Conservation Efforts

Conservation strategies focus on mitigating human impacts in North Atlantic Right Whale habitats. One key measure involves implementing vessel speed restrictions in designated areas to reduce the risk of ship strikes. Examples include mandatory and voluntary speed limits, such as those under NOAA’s Ship Strike Reduction Rule (50 CFR Part 224, Subpart K).

Efforts are also underway to modify fishing gear to minimize entanglement risk. This includes trials of ropeless fishing gear and the use of weak links in ropes designed to break under sufficient strain. The designation of Critical Habitat under the Endangered Species Act, specifically outlined in regulations like 50 CFR Part 226, provides legal protection for these areas.

Ongoing monitoring and research play an important role in understanding whale distribution and the effectiveness of conservation measures. These continuous efforts inform adaptive management strategies aimed at better protecting their habitat and supporting the species’ recovery.
