This focus on root health means the plant is already well-positioned for success, provided the gardener handles it correctly.
Prior to planting, attention must be paid to the specific care tag accompanying the plant, which outlines its light, soil, and moisture requirements. If immediate planting is not possible, the plant should be temporarily stored in a cool, shaded area away from drying winds. During temporary storage, the root ball should be checked every few days to ensure it remains moist without becoming waterlogged.
Ensuring Planting Success
Success begins with proper site preparation, which involves digging a planting hole that is shallow but wide. The hole should be dug deep enough so the plant’s root flare—the point where the trunk widens at the soil line—sits slightly above the surrounding grade to account for settling. The width of the hole should be two to three times the diameter of the root ball to encourage outward root growth.
Before placing the plant into the prepared hole, the root ball must be inspected for circling or matted roots, which is common with container-grown stock.
