For some species, such as the brown marmorated stink bug, subtle markings can also offer clues. Both male and female brown marmorated stink bugs have a dark line across the widest part of their upper backs, which usually contains light-colored spots. In males, these spots tend to be raised, forming small bumps, while in females, they remain smooth. Observing these minute details often requires a magnifying glass or very close inspection. Additionally, the last segment of the abdomen may offer a visual distinction; males might have claspers, while females have a more pointed or U-shaped tip.
Contrasting Roles and Behaviors

Both sexes can use substrate-borne vibrations to communicate and locate potential mates. Once a female accepts the male’s advances, mating can occur. Males may also engage in mate guarding after copulation, remaining attached to the female to prevent other males from mating with her and ensuring their paternity.
