Root barriers can redirect growth in specific situations, but use them cautiously; they can girdle or redirect roots undesirably, potentially harming stability.

Exposed roots can be managed by adding mulch, but never bury the root flare, where the trunk widens at the base. Burying it leads to trunk rot and tree decline. Severe root issues requiring significant pruning should only be handled by a certified arborist.
