Is the Grizzly Giant Tree Still Standing?

The Grizzly Giant, a monumental Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), stands firm, continuing its multi-millennial existence. This ancient tree remains a towering presence in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Its story is one of enduring size and incredible resilience, rooted in the unique biology of its species. This colossal organism represents one of the largest living single-stem trees on the planet.

Current Status and Location

The Grizzly Giant is located within the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, the largest grove in the southern section of Yosemite National Park in California. The National Park Service actively manages this location, monitoring the health and stability of the grove’s hundreds of mature sequoias. The tree’s survival was recently confirmed following the 2022 Washburn Fire, which threatened the Mariposa Grove.

During the fire, the National Park Service implemented protective measures, including installing sprinklers around the base of the Grizzly Giant and other significant trees to increase humidity and cool the surrounding environment. This action, combined with decades of prescribed burning to reduce forest floor fuel, successfully safeguarded the tree. Park officials confirmed the Grizzly Giant remained unharmed after the fire was contained, allowing the grove to reopen to visitors shortly thereafter.

Defining the Grizzly Giant’s Immensity

The tree’s fame rests on its staggering physical dimensions, placing it among the world’s most massive trees by volume. Its estimated age is between 2,000 and 3,000 years, based on measurements and comparisons with other sequoias. The Grizzly Giant reaches a height of approximately 209 feet, making it the second-largest tree in Yosemite National Park.

At ground level, the tree’s circumference measures 96.5 feet, with the lower trunk featuring a diameter of nearly 30 feet. Its largest limb branches out about 95 feet above the ground and is over six feet in diameter, a size comparable to the trunk of many mature trees. This sheer bulk gives the Grizzly Giant an estimated weight of around 3,700 tons, despite its pronounced lean of almost five degrees to the south. Its 1990 volume measurement estimated it at 34,005 cubic feet of wood.

The Secrets of Sequoia Longevity

The ability of Giant Sequoias to reach monumental ages results from unique biological adaptations allowing the species to thrive in the Sierra Nevada environment. The most remarkable feature is the bark, which can grow up to two feet thick on mature trees. This thick, fibrous outer layer contains a network structure with air-filled cavities that provide exceptional insulation against heat.

The bark also contains high concentrations of tannin, a chemical compound that gives the bark its reddish color and acts as a natural deterrent to insects and wood-decaying fungi. This combination of insulation and chemical defense allows the trees to survive low-to-moderate intensity fires and resist the decay that fells most other tree species. The species also relies on fire for reproduction, as the heat helps dry and open their cones to release seeds, which then germinate successfully in the post-fire, mineral-rich soil.

While the Grizzly Giant and its neighbors are naturally resistant to historical fire regimes, they face new challenges from climate change, specifically severe drought and the subsequent rise in high-intensity wildfires. Conservation strategies now focus on reducing accumulated forest floor fuels through carefully managed prescribed burns. These burns mimic the natural, low-intensity fires the sequoias evolved with, helping mitigate the risk of catastrophic fire and ensuring the longevity of these ancient groves.
