Sand, which is primarily composed of silica and various rock fragments, is not a substance the human body is designed to process. While accidental, small-volume ingestion, common in children or pets, is usually not harmful, deliberately eating sand poses various health risks. The material is non-digestible, meaning it passes through the digestive tract largely unchanged. These dangers range from immediate mechanical issues to longer-term concerns related to biological and chemical contaminants found mixed within the grains.

Immediate Physical Risks of Swallowing Sand

The most immediate danger from swallowing sand relates to its physical, granular nature. Sand grains are abrasive, and consuming a large quantity can cause mechanical irritation to the delicate linings of the esophagus and stomach as the material moves through the upper digestive system. The lack of solubility means that sand cannot be broken down by stomach acids or enzymes.

The non-digestible nature of sand creates a risk of intestinal obstruction, which is a significant medical concern. If a substantial volume is ingested, it can clump together in the stomach or intestines, forming a solid mass that prevents the normal passage of waste. These biological risks include bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, viruses, and parasites like hookworm or roundworm eggs.

Studies have shown that beach sand can contain significantly higher levels of fecal bacteria compared to the adjacent water, making direct ingestion a considerable infection risk. In addition to biological agents, the sand’s geographical source and proximity to industrial areas can introduce chemical risks. This includes trace amounts of heavy metals like lead or arsenic, which can accumulate in the body over time with repeated exposure.
