Defining Rock Salt and Its Sources
Rock salt is the common name for halite, a naturally occurring mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride. The most recognized variety is Himalayan pink salt, which is mined from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan. This unrefined salt is extracted by hand and minimally processed.
The distinctive pink hue comes from trace elements, notably iron oxide, naturally bound within the crystal structure. Although rock salt contains up to 84 different trace minerals, it remains overwhelmingly sodium chloride, typically making up 97% to 99% of its composition. The small percentage of other elements gives it a unique appearance and flavor profile compared to refined table salt.

The primary health consideration for any salt is its sodium content, which is virtually identical for rock salt and table salt when measured by weight. Both types are approximately 40% sodium by mass, meaning excessive consumption of either can contribute to high blood pressure. The daily recommendation for sodium intake remains the same, regardless of the salt source chosen.
Coarse rock salts, such as Himalayan pink salt, may contain slightly less sodium per teaspoon volume than fine table salt. This difference is purely due to the larger crystal size, which leaves more empty space in the measuring spoon. Consumers must remain mindful that a gram of rock salt carries the same sodium load as a gram of refined table salt.
The widely advertised advantage of rock salt is its trace mineral content, including small amounts of iron, potassium, and magnesium. While these minerals are present, the quantities are negligible in the context of human daily nutritional requirements. For instance, it would take nearly four pounds of pink salt to meet the daily recommended intake for a single mineral like potassium. These elements are far better obtained from whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and dairy.
The Critical Role of Iodine
A fundamental difference between most rock salts and standard table salt relates to the essential micronutrient iodine. Iodine is necessary for the proper function of the thyroid gland, which regulates metabolism, growth, and development. Table salt is fortified with iodine as a low-cost, effective public health strategy to prevent deficiency. Iodine deficiency can lead to thyroid problems such as goiter. Since rock salts are unrefined, they do not undergo this fortification process and contain only trace amounts of naturally occurring iodine.
