River rock refers to smooth, rounded stones, typically sourced from natural riverbeds or quarried and tumbled to achieve a similar finish. Constant water flow erodes and polishes the surfaces of these stones, giving them a distinct, organic look. This material is a popular groundcover choice, prized for its ability to create a clean, permanent aesthetic in landscape design. River rock is often considered an alternative to organic materials like wood mulch, offering a low-replacement-frequency option.

River rock offers significant aesthetic value, providing a natural and polished look with a wide range of colors, textures, and sizes that can complement any design style. Using the stones to create borders around garden beds or pathways provides a clean, permanent edge that helps contain soil and other mulches.

River rock should be avoided in areas with heavy leaf or needle drop, such as directly beneath large trees, because the accumulation of organic debris leads to a high-maintenance mess.
