Is Queso Fresco Safe for Lactose Intolerance?

If you’d rather just eat the queso fresco, over-the-counter lactase enzyme tablets are the most practical solution. The timing matters: you need to take the tablet with your first bite of dairy food, not after you’ve already started feeling symptoms. Once bloating or discomfort has set in, the enzyme won’t reverse it. The supplement works by supplying the enzyme your body underproduces, breaking down lactose in your digestive tract before it reaches the large intestine where bacteria ferment it and cause gas.

For a small serving of queso fresco, a standard-dose tablet is typically sufficient. If you’re eating a dairy-heavy meal with multiple sources of lactose, you may need a higher-strength version.
