Teflon is a registered trademark of The Chemours Company, a spin-off from DuPont. The brand name was established in 1945, several years after the initial discovery of polytetrafluoroethylene. DuPont recognized the commercial potential of this novel material, particularly its non-stick properties, and began marketing products under the Teflon brand.
Teflon gained widespread recognition through its adoption in non-stick cookware, starting in the 1960s. This application revolutionized home cooking by allowing food to release easily from pans without sticking. The brand name Teflon became synonymous with non-stick surfaces in the public consciousness.
Connecting PTFE and Teflon
Teflon is a brand name for products that incorporate the chemical compound PTFE. This is similar to how Kleenex is a brand name for facial tissues; while all Kleenex products are facial tissues, not all facial tissues are Kleenex. Similarly, all products branded as Teflon contain PTFE, but many products utilize PTFE without being branded as Teflon.
Chemours licenses the Teflon brand to manufacturers who use PTFE in their products, ensuring certain quality standards. Many other manufacturers also produce items containing PTFE that are sold under different brand names or simply as “PTFE products.” The underlying material providing the unique properties in both cases remains polytetrafluoroethylene.
