The primary component that makes pepper spray dangerous is Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), an oily resin derived from chili pepper plants. This extract contains capsaicinoids, with capsaicin being the most potent irritant. These compounds cause the burning sensation felt in hot peppers, but in pepper spray, they are highly concentrated to cause an immediate inflammatory response.

To turn this resin into a sprayable product, manufacturers blend the OC with carrier agents, solvents, and propellants. These non-OC ingredients keep the capsaicinoids suspended and facilitate their forceful discharge from the canister. Solvents often include alcohol or hydrocarbons, while propellants may be compressed gases like nitrogen or carbon dioxide. These industrial-grade chemical carriers are not safe for human ingestion, adding another layer of toxicity.

Immediate Physiological Effects of Ingestion

Ingesting even a small amount of pepper spray triggers an immediate and violent reaction as the capsaicinoids interact with pain receptors in the mouth and throat. This contact causes an intense, localized burning sensation that quickly spreads across the mucous membranes of the lips, tongue, and esophagus. The body attempts to flush out the irritant by producing excessive amounts of saliva and mucus, leading to a feeling of choking or gagging.
