Is PediaSure Dairy Free? Not All Versions Are

Standard PediaSure is not dairy free. The classic PediaSure Grow & Gain formula contains milk protein concentrate as a primary ingredient and carries an allergen label stating it contains milk and soy ingredients. However, Abbott (PediaSure’s manufacturer) does make at least one plant-based version, PediaSure Harvest, which contains no milk ingredients.

Why Standard PediaSure Contains Dairy

PediaSure Grow & Gain, the most widely available version, uses milk protein concentrate as its main protein source. This is a concentrated form of the proteins naturally found in cow’s milk, including both casein and whey. It provides the amino acid profile that supports growth in children, which is the product’s core purpose.

The allergen statement on the can reads: “Contains milk and soy ingredients.” This means standard PediaSure is unsuitable for children with a cow’s milk protein allergy. Even trace exposure to milk protein can trigger reactions in allergic children, so this product should be avoided entirely in those cases.

PediaSure and Lactose Intolerance

There’s an important distinction between a dairy allergy and lactose intolerance. Standard PediaSure is labeled as suitable for children with lactose intolerance, meaning the milk sugar (lactose) has been removed or reduced to negligible levels. But the milk proteins remain. If your child reacts to lactose specifically and not milk protein, regular PediaSure may be fine. If the concern is a true milk allergy, it is not safe.

One additional note from the label: PediaSure is not suitable for children with galactosemia, a rare metabolic condition that affects how the body processes a sugar component found in milk.

PediaSure Harvest: The Dairy-Free Option

PediaSure Harvest is a plant-based formulation that contains no milk, gluten, or lactose ingredients. It was designed for families looking for a dairy-free nutritional supplement for children. If your child has a cow’s milk protein allergy or you’re following a dairy-free diet for other reasons, this is the version to look for.

Availability of PediaSure Harvest can vary by retailer. It is not as widely stocked as the standard Grow & Gain formula, so you may need to check online retailers or specialty stores. The nutritional profile differs somewhat from the original since it relies on plant-based protein sources rather than milk protein concentrate.

Choosing the Right Version

Which PediaSure works for your child depends on what you’re trying to avoid:

  • Lactose only: Standard PediaSure Grow & Gain is labeled as suitable for lactose intolerance.
  • All dairy proteins: You need PediaSure Harvest or another dairy-free pediatric supplement. Standard PediaSure contains milk protein and is not safe for milk allergy.
  • Soy: Standard PediaSure also contains soy ingredients, so if your child has both a milk and soy allergy, check the Harvest label carefully for soy content as well.

PediaSure comes in several product lines beyond these two, including PediaSure SideKicks and PediaSure Grow & Gain with Fiber. Each has its own ingredient list, and most of the standard varieties contain milk protein. Always check the allergen statement on the specific product you’re buying rather than assuming one version’s ingredients match another.
