Nutella does not contain peanuts as an ingredient. Its seven ingredients are sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, whey, soy lecithin, and vanillin. No peanut oil, peanut butter, or peanut-derived components appear in the recipe.
That said, “peanut-free” can mean different things depending on your level of concern. If you’re managing a peanut allergy, the ingredient list is only part of the picture.
What Nutella Actually Contains
Nutella is a hazelnut-cocoa spread made by Ferrero. Hazelnuts are tree nuts, not peanuts. Peanuts are legumes, botanically closer to beans and lentils than to almonds, walnuts, or hazelnuts. So the two are in entirely different food families.

In one study of 161 people sensitized to hazelnuts, 68% also showed sensitization to peanuts, and 45% had a confirmed clinical peanut allergy. That’s a strikingly high overlap.
The reason isn’t straightforward cross-reactivity between the two nuts. Researchers found that peanut allergy in these individuals was driven by the immune system reacting independently to specific peanut proteins, not by the body confusing hazelnut proteins for peanut ones. In other words, people who are allergic to one are simply more likely to also be allergic to the other as a separate allergy, rather than one triggering the other through molecular similarity.
This matters practically: if you’re allergic to peanuts, you aren’t automatically allergic to the hazelnuts in Nutella. But the odds that you also have a tree nut allergy are higher than average. If you’ve never been tested for tree nut allergies specifically, it’s worth knowing your status before eating hazelnut-based products.
Other Allergens in Nutella
While Nutella is free of peanuts in its recipe, it does contain three allergens that affect millions of people:

When shopping, look for certifications or clear “produced in a peanut-free and tree nut-free facility” language on the packaging. A product that simply doesn’t list nuts in the ingredients isn’t the same as one manufactured with allergen controls in place.
