Is Inferential Statistics Qualitative or Quantitative?

Inferential statistics is a quantitative method. It uses numerical data from a sample to draw conclusions about a larger population, relying on probability theory, mathematical formulas, and numeric outputs like p-values and confidence intervals. While inferential techniques can occasionally be applied to coded qualitative data in mixed-methods research, the process itself is fundamentally quantitative.

Why Inferential Statistics Is Quantitative

Inferential statistics works by collecting measurements from a smaller group (a sample) and using those numbers to estimate what’s true for an entire population. If you measured the heights of 500 randomly selected adult women in the United States, you could calculate the average height of that sample and use it as an estimate of the national average. You could also build a confidence interval, a range that the true population value likely falls within, or run a hypothesis test to check whether two groups differ in a meaningful way.

Every step in that process is numerical. The inputs are numbers, the calculations are mathematical, and the outputs are expressed as statistics: test values, probability scores, and estimated ranges. That’s what makes it quantitative by nature.

How It Differs From Qualitative Analysis

Qualitative analysis works with non-numerical information: interview transcripts, open-ended survey responses, observed behaviors. Researchers analyze this data by identifying patterns, generating codes, and organizing those codes into themes. The end product is a narrative or interpretive framework, not a number.

Inferential statistics sits on the opposite end. Where qualitative research asks “what does this mean?” through interpretation, inferential statistics asks “is this pattern real or could it have happened by chance?” through calculation. The two approaches answer fundamentally different kinds of questions.

The Role of Data Types

One reason this question comes up is that data itself exists on a spectrum from qualitative to quantitative, and the type of data you have determines which inferential tests are appropriate.

  • Nominal data consists of categories with no natural order, like eye color or blood type. This is qualitative data, and you can’t calculate a meaningful average from it. But you can still apply an inferential test: the chi-square test compares observed category counts against expected counts to determine whether the distribution is statistically significant. The data being categorized is qualitative, but the statistical test itself is a quantitative procedure.
  • Ordinal data has a clear ranking but inconsistent spacing between levels, like a pain scale of 1 to 10 or education levels. Depending on context, ordinal data can be treated as qualitative or quantitative. Non-parametric tests like the Mann-Whitney U-test work well here.
  • Interval and ratio data are fully quantitative. Temperature readings, weight, income, and reaction times all fall into these categories. They support the widest range of inferential tests, including t-tests and ANOVA, which compare group means and require the data to follow a roughly normal distribution.

So while the data feeding into an inferential test can range from categorical to fully numeric, the inferential process always produces quantitative output.

What Inferential Statistics Actually Produces

Two of the most common outputs from inferential statistics are p-values and confidence intervals, both of which are purely numerical.

A p-value tells you the probability that the results you observed could have occurred by chance if there were no real effect. By convention, a p-value below 0.05 is considered statistically significant, meaning there’s less than a 1 in 20 chance the result is a fluke. Values below 0.01 are sometimes called “highly significant” because the odds of a chance finding drop to less than 1 in 100.

A confidence interval gives you a range where the true value likely sits. A 95% confidence interval means that if you repeated the study many times and constructed an interval each time, 95% of those intervals would contain the true population value. If that range doesn’t include zero (or whatever value represents “no effect”), the result is statistically significant at the 5% level. Confidence intervals are especially useful because they show not just whether an effect exists, but how large or small it might plausibly be.

Where Qualitative Research Meets Inferential Statistics

In mixed-methods research, investigators sometimes combine qualitative and quantitative approaches in a single study. A researcher might conduct interviews (qualitative), code the responses into categories, count how often each category appears, and then run a chi-square test or another inferential procedure on those counts. The original data was qualitative, but the moment it gets converted to numbers and fed through a statistical test, the analysis becomes quantitative.

This is an important distinction. Qualitative data can be transformed into quantitative data through coding and counting. But inferential statistics, the act of testing hypotheses and estimating population values through probability, remains a quantitative technique regardless of where the numbers originally came from. In research methods textbooks, inferential statistics consistently appears under the quantitative analysis umbrella alongside descriptive statistics, while qualitative analysis is treated as a separate domain involving thematic interpretation rather than numerical testing.

Descriptive vs. Inferential Statistics

Both descriptive and inferential statistics are quantitative, but they serve different purposes. Descriptive statistics summarize what’s in front of you: the average age of participants, the percentage who responded “yes,” the spread of test scores. They describe your data and nothing more.

Inferential statistics take the next step. They use your sample data to make claims about a population you haven’t fully measured. That leap from “here’s what we observed” to “here’s what’s probably true for everyone” is what makes inferential statistics inferential. It requires assumptions about probability, sample size, and data distribution that descriptive statistics don’t need. Even in studies where the main goal is inferential testing, researchers still report descriptive statistics first to give a general picture of the data before moving to hypothesis testing and significance results.
