While alkalinity is related to pH, it is distinct; pH measures the concentration of hydrogen ions, indicating how acidic or basic a substance is at a given moment, whereas alkalinity gauges its ability to maintain a stable pH by absorbing acidic inputs.
Alkalinity is a property measured in various natural and engineered systems, reflecting different chemical compositions and buffering capacities across these environments. Symptoms such as nausea, bloating, or constipation have been reported, though these are typically mild and vary among individuals.
Prolonged consumption of very high alkaline water can influence the absorption of essential nutrients. Reduced stomach acidity may hinder the uptake of iron, zinc, and magnesium, which require an acidic environment for optimal absorption. This interference, while not always severe, can be a concern for individuals with pre-existing nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, bathing or showering in highly alkaline water can disrupt the skin’s natural acid mantle, potentially causing dryness or irritation.
The human body regulates its internal pH, primarily through the kidneys and lungs, maintaining blood pH within a narrow range of 7.35 to 7.45. Systemic alkalinity, known as alkalosis, is rare and results from underlying medical conditions, such as severe vomiting, hyperventilation, or kidney disorders, rather than dietary intake. While the body compensates for minor fluctuations, extreme and persistent high alkalinity in the blood can disrupt cellular functions and enzyme activities, potentially leading to symptoms like muscle spasms, confusion, or even seizures in severe, uncompensated cases.
Environmental and System Impacts of High Alkalinity
High alkalinity in water systems presents challenges for infrastructure and water quality. In plumbing, highly alkaline water contributes to scaling, where mineral deposits like calcium carbonate accumulate inside pipes and water heaters. This buildup reduces water flow, decreases heating appliance efficiency, and shortens plumbing system lifespan. High alkalinity can also promote corrosion of metal pipes by altering their protective oxide layers.
Natural aquatic environments are sensitive to elevated alkalinity levels, which can disrupt ecosystems. Excessive alkalinity alters the water’s chemical balance, affecting the solubility and bioavailability of essential nutrients and trace metals. This imbalance stresses aquatic organisms, impacting the growth and reproduction of fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. Some species may struggle to regulate their internal salt and water balance in highly alkaline conditions, leading to physiological distress or mortality.
In soil, high alkalinity significantly impacts agricultural productivity. Such soils have a pH above 7.0, which reduces the availability of plant nutrients. Iron, zinc, manganese, and phosphorus become less soluble and available to plants in highly alkaline conditions. This nutrient lockout can result in stunted growth, chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), and reduced crop yields.
Addressing High Alkalinity
Identifying high alkalinity involves testing the substance in question. For water, methods range from home testing kits to precise laboratory analyses. Soil alkalinity can be determined through soil testing kits or by sending samples to agricultural laboratories.
Once high alkalinity is confirmed, several approaches can mitigate its effects. For drinking water, solutions include point-of-use filtration systems, such as reverse osmosis units, which remove dissolved minerals responsible for alkalinity. Ion exchange systems can also replace alkalinity-contributing ions with less problematic ones. These methods help ensure the water consumed is within a desirable alkalinity range.
In aquatic environments, adjusting high alkalinity involves managing ecosystem health. Aeration can promote the release of carbon dioxide, which reduces carbonic acid and thus alkalinity. Chemical adjustments, such as adding acids, are also used in larger-scale systems like ponds or industrial wastewater treatment.
For soil, high alkalinity can be addressed by adding acidic amendments. Materials like elemental sulfur, gypsum, or peat moss can gradually lower soil pH, improving nutrient availability for plants.
