Beyond seizure control, gabapentin is also FDA-approved for managing postherpetic neuralgia, which is chronic nerve pain after a shingles outbreak. It is approved to treat moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS), a condition characterized by uncomfortable sensations and an urge to move the legs. The medication is thought to work by binding to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, which reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters and thereby helps alleviate nerve pain and abnormal electrical activity.
