This contrasts with inorganic phosphate additives, often used in processed foods as preservatives, which are nearly 100% absorbed.
Specific preparation methods can reduce the phosphorus content in fish, a practical strategy for those on a restricted diet. Boiling or steaming causes water-soluble minerals to leach into the cooking liquid, effectively lowering the concentration in the fillet. Boiling fish for 15 minutes can reduce phosphorus content by about 24%, and 30 minutes can result in a reduction of up to 31%. This technique minimizes the loss of protein and fat, ensuring the fish remains a nutritious food choice.
