Colostrum is not dairy free. It is the first milk produced by mammals after giving birth, which makes it a dairy product by definition. Bovine colostrum, the type sold as a supplement, comes from cows and contains the same allergenic proteins and sugars found in regular cow’s milk, including casein, whey, and lactose.
Why Colostrum Is Classified as Dairy
Colostrum is produced by mammary glands, just like the milk you’d pour on cereal. The difference is timing: colostrum is secreted during the first few days after birth, while mature milk comes later. Its composition is distinct (higher in protein and immune factors, lower in some sugars), but it is still milk in every regulatory and biological sense.
The FDA classifies “milk” as milk from domesticated cows, goats, sheep, or other ruminants for allergen labeling purposes. Any ingredient derived from that milk, including whey and casein, counts as a major food allergen. Bovine colostrum supplements fall squarely into this category and must be labeled accordingly.
Allergenic Proteins in Colostrum
Colostrum contains both major families of dairy protein that trigger allergic reactions: casein and whey. The whey fraction alone is roughly 55 to 65 percent beta-lactoglobulin and 15 to 20 percent alpha-lactalbumin, the same proteins responsible for most cow’s milk allergies. It also contains immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, and bovine serum albumin.
If you have a diagnosed cow’s milk protein allergy (the IgE-mediated kind that can cause hives, swelling, or anaphylaxis), colostrum carries the same risk as drinking milk. Mayo Clinic Press notes that colostrum is “not recommended for those with milk protein allergies or intolerances” because it contains both lactose and casein.
Lactose Content Compared to Regular Milk
Colostrum does contain lactose, though less than mature milk. Bovine colostrum has about 2.5 grams of lactose per 100 mL, compared to roughly 4.8 grams per 100 grams in regular cow’s milk. That’s roughly half the lactose concentration.
In practice, this lower level may not matter much either way. Colostrum supplements are typically taken in small doses (a few grams of powder per day), so the total lactose per serving is minimal. Some people with mild lactose intolerance tolerate colostrum supplements without symptoms simply because the serving size is so small. But “lower in lactose” is not the same as “lactose free,” and anyone with severe lactose intolerance should be aware it’s still present.
Can Colostrum Be Made Dairy Free?
Not really. The bioactive compounds people take colostrum for, like immunoglobulins and lactoferrin, are themselves dairy proteins. Removing all dairy components would defeat the purpose of the supplement.
That said, some manufacturers use ultrafiltration and nanofiltration to remove smaller molecules like lactose while concentrating the larger proteins. This can produce a colostrum product that is lower in lactose, but it still contains casein, whey, and other milk proteins. These filtered products are sometimes marketed as “lactose-reduced” or positioned for people with lactose sensitivity, but they remain dairy products and still pose a risk for anyone with a true milk protein allergy.
Who Should Avoid Colostrum
If you avoid dairy for any of the following reasons, colostrum supplements are not safe for you:
- Cow’s milk protein allergy: Colostrum contains the exact proteins (casein, beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin) that trigger allergic reactions. Even supplement-sized doses can provoke a response in sensitized individuals.
- Vegan diet: Colostrum is an animal product harvested from cows shortly after calving.
- Strict lactose-free diet: Standard colostrum supplements contain lactose. Filtered versions may reduce it but don’t eliminate it entirely.
If your reason for avoiding dairy is mild lactose intolerance rather than a protein allergy, the small serving sizes of most colostrum supplements (typically 1 to 3 grams) deliver very little lactose. Many people in this category use colostrum without digestive issues, but individual tolerance varies.
