The desire to enjoy favorite foods during pregnancy often comes with questions about safety, and cheese is a common concern. While certain soft and unpasteurized cheeses are typically advised against, cheddar is generally considered safe for pregnant individuals. As a hard cheese, cheddar’s physical and chemical composition creates an environment naturally hostile to harmful bacteria that can cause illness.

The Safety Status of Cheddar

Cheddar’s safety profile is directly linked to its classification as a hard, aged cheese. The cheesemaking process results in a product with significantly lower moisture content compared to soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert. This low water activity is a natural defense, as harmful bacteria require moisture to multiply effectively. Furthermore, the aging process contributes to a higher acidity level, which is also unfavorable for bacterial growth. This combination of low moisture and high acidity makes cheddar a poor environment for pathogens to thrive. Hard cheeses such as cheddar, Parmesan, and Swiss are often considered safe to eat during pregnancy because their inherent characteristics provide a physical and chemical barrier against potential contaminants.

The primary reason for caution regarding cheese consumption during pregnancy is the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for listeriosis. Pregnant individuals are at a significantly higher risk of contracting listeriosis, being about 10 to 20 times more likely to get the infection than the general healthy adult population. This increased susceptibility is due to the natural suppression of the immune system during gestation.

Listeriosis can be transmitted through contaminated food, including certain dairy products, and the consequences during pregnancy can be severe. While an infected person may only experience mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can be passed to the unborn baby. Possible outcomes include miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, and life-threatening infections for the newborn, such as sepsis or meningitis.

The Role of Pasteurization

To eliminate the risk of Listeria monocytogenes and other pathogens, milk used in cheesemaking often undergoes pasteurization. Pasteurization is a heat treatment process where milk is heated to a specific temperature for a set amount of time to kill harmful bacteria. For example, milk may be heated to 72 degrees Celsius (161 degrees Fahrenheit) for 15 seconds.

This process effectively creates a clean starting slate for cheesemaking, ensuring the milk is free of dangerous microbes. The most reliable way to ensure a cheese is safe is to check the food label for the phrase “made from pasteurized milk.” Any cheese, whether hard or soft, made from unpasteurized (raw) milk carries an inherent risk of contamination that is best avoided during pregnancy. Choosing a pasteurized product provides the highest degree of safety.
