This compound is often produced by reacting borax with a strong mineral acid, such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. Boric acid is soluble in water, with its solubility increasing with temperature.

Clarifying the Relationship and Key Differences

Despite their similar names and shared boron element, borax and boric acid are not the same substance. Borax is a salt of boric acid, meaning boric acid can be derived from borax through a chemical process involving the addition of an acid. This relationship highlights that while they are chemically linked, their molecular structures and resulting properties differ.

Their primary applications also diverge considerably. Borax is widely recognized for its use in cleaning, softening water, and as a laundry additive. In contrast, boric acid is frequently employed as an antiseptic for minor cuts and burns, an antifungal agent, and a pesticide, particularly effective against insects like ants and cockroaches. Boric acid also has industrial uses in manufacturing fiberglass and LCD flat panel displays. While borax contains boron, boric acid boasts a higher concentration of boron, which contributes to its enhanced efficacy in applications such as pest control.
