Borax and Sodium Carbonate are white crystalline powders often confused in household cleaning, but they are chemically distinct substances. Borax is Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate (Na2B4O7 ยท 10H2O). This compound is defined by the presence of the element boron (B), which forms a unique tetraborate anion structure. When dissolved in water, Borax produces a moderately alkaline solution, making it effective for cleaning and buffering. The boron structure also allows for specific chemical reactions, such as serving as a cross-linking agent in polymer chemistry.
Sodium Carbonate, often called Washing Soda or Soda Ash, has the simpler chemical formula Na2CO3. The core difference from Borax is the presence of carbon (C) in the form of the carbonate anion (CO3 2-), and the complete absence of boron. This distinction is fundamental, as the carbonate ion makes Sodium Carbonate significantly more alkaline than Borax, resulting in a much higher pH when dissolved.

It is effective against common household pests such as ants, where worker ants carry the slow-acting poison back to their colonies. Sodium Carbonate is a powerful water softener, which is one of its primary household and industrial applications. It works by reacting with and precipitating the calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions that cause water hardness, preventing them from interfering with detergent action. The removal of these mineral ions allows soaps and detergents to lather more effectively, improving the overall cleaning process.
The high alkalinity of Sodium Carbonate makes it an excellent heavy-duty cleaner and degreaser. The highly basic solution facilitates the saponification of fats and oils, converting greasy residues into water-soluble soaps that can be easily washed away. Sodium Carbonate is also used as a potent additive to boost standard laundry detergent performance and in swimming pools to raise the water’s pH and maintain stable alkaline conditions.
