An upset stomach can be a symptom of COVID-19. While respiratory signs are more commonly recognized, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms have been observed in many individuals with confirmed infections.
Digestive Issues and COVID-19
Gastrointestinal symptoms are a common manifestation of COVID-19, with varying prevalence in confirmed cases. These symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In some instances, GI issues like nausea and vomiting may be the initial or sole symptoms. Studies indicate that about 50% of people with COVID-19 report at least one GI symptom, sometimes appearing before respiratory ones. Nausea and vomiting occur in 1% to 29.4% of adult cases, while diarrhea varies from 2% to 49.5%, and abdominal pain affects 2.2% to 6% of patients.
Other Common Signs of COVID-19
While an upset stomach can occur, COVID-19 is typically associated with a broader range of symptoms. Common signs include a high temperature or chills, a new continuous cough, and a loss or change to the sense of smell or taste. Many individuals also report fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, a sore throat, shortness of breath, congestion, or a runny nose. These symptoms can appear 2 to 14 days after exposure. An upset stomach, when present, often accompanies these, though it can sometimes occur in isolation.
Guidance on Testing and Care
If experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19, including an upset stomach, get tested immediately. If a rapid antigen test is negative but symptoms persist, take another test after 48 hours. Testing is also suggested if exposed to someone with a confirmed case, waiting at least five full days after exposure. For self-care at home, get plenty of rest and drink ample fluids to stay hydrated. Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help manage fever, aches, and pains. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or if you experience emergency warning signs such as trouble breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, or bluish lips or face.
Upset Stomach Beyond COVID-19
An upset stomach is a common symptom that can stem from various causes unrelated to COVID-19. Digestive issues like indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, or food poisoning are frequent culprits, triggered by eating certain foods, consuming improperly handled food, or eating too quickly. Other common causes include viral gastroenteritis (a stomach bug) or bacterial infections. Stress and anxiety can also cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Less common but possible causes include food allergies, medication side effects, or conditions like irritable bowel syndrome.
