Aloe vera is classified as a succulent perennial plant belonging to the genus Aloe. Taxonomically, this species is placed within the Asphodelaceae family, commonly known as the daylily family. Aloe vera is genetically distinct from plants like agave or cacti, possessing the specialized adaptations shared by all succulents.

What Defines a Succulent Plant

A succulent is any plant that has evolved to store water in specialized, thickened, and fleshy tissues, typically in the leaves, stems, or roots. This adaptation allows the plant to endure prolonged periods of drought and high temperatures. The leaves of Aloe vera exemplify this trait, being engorged with a clear, gelatinous pulp that is roughly 99% water. This water-storage tissue is a defining characteristic of succulence.

Succulents also possess specialized mechanisms to minimize water loss. These include a low surface-to-volume ratio, which reduces the area exposed to evaporation, and a thick, waxy outer layer (cuticle) that acts as a barrier against moisture loss. Furthermore, they utilize Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis. This metabolic pathway allows the plant’s stomata to open only at night to take in carbon dioxide, conserving water during the hot, dry daylight hours.

Essential Care Requirements for Aloe

Caring for Aloe vera successfully relies on mimicking the arid conditions of its natural habitat. The plant requires bright, indirect light, especially when grown indoors near a window. Direct, unfiltered sunlight magnified by glass can scorch the leaves, turning them a reddish-brown color. The ideal temperature range is between 55°F and 85°F, and the plant should be protected from cold drafts.

The most common mistake in Aloe vera care is overwatering, which quickly leads to root rot. The soil must dry out completely between waterings. When watering, thoroughly saturate the soil until water drains from the bottom of the pot. Using a porous container, such as terracotta, is recommended as it helps wick away excess moisture. The potting medium must be extremely well-draining, making a pre-mixed cactus or succulent blend the most suitable choice.
