Patients also experience numbness, a “pins and needles” sensation (paresthesia), and muscle weakness in the affected limb.

The resulting physical limitations determine if the condition becomes a disability. Lumbar radiculopathy, often called sciatica, can severely restrict a person’s ability to sit, stand, walk, or lift objects. Cervical radiculopathy, affecting the neck and upper extremities, can impair fine motor skills, grip strength, and the ability to perform overhead tasks. These physical consequences determine the extent to which the condition interferes with major life activities.

The definition of disability in the workplace is governed by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a civil rights law protecting against discrimination. Under the ADA, a person has a disability if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
