Is a Dolphin Endangered? A Look at Their Conservation Status

Dolphins are intelligent marine mammals found worldwide. The question of whether a dolphin is endangered has no simple answer. Their conservation status varies considerably by species and even by distinct populations. Some dolphin species face severe threats, while others maintain stable populations.

Understanding Dolphin Conservation Status

The vaquita ( Phocoena sinus), a porpoise related to dolphins, is Critically Endangered with fewer than 20 individuals. The baiji ( Lipotes vexillifer), a freshwater dolphin from China’s Yangtze River, is functionally extinct, with no viable population for reproduction. In contrast, the common bottlenose dolphin ( Tursiops truncatus) is widespread and listed as Least Concern. However, certain regional populations may face local pressures.

The Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) works to conserve migratory aquatic species throughout their range, leading to cooperative conservation efforts across countries.

Public awareness campaigns and educational programs foster understanding of dolphin conservation issues.
