These unique animals, often seen lounging near water bodies in South America, possess particular dietary habits that allow them to thrive in their diverse environments. Understanding what capybaras consume offers insight into their ecological role and the specific biological mechanisms that support their existence.

Capybara’s Herbivorous Nature

Capybaras are herbivores, meaning their diet consists exclusively of plant matter. This classification places them among animals like cows and rabbits, which rely on vegetation for their nutritional needs. Their herbivorous nature is fundamental to their position within their ecosystems, as they play a role in grazing and shaping plant communities.

The Capybara Diet: What They Eat

The diet of a capybara primarily consists of grasses and aquatic plants, reflecting their close association with water. They graze extensively on various types of grasses found along riverbanks and in wetlands, consuming large quantities daily, potentially 6 to 8 pounds of grass per day. Capybaras also eat water plants such as water hyacinths and reeds, which are readily available in their semi-aquatic habitats. Their continuous chewing on fibrous plants also helps to keep their continuously growing teeth in check.

Seasonal changes influence their food choices. During the wet season, when plant growth is abundant, capybaras tend to be more selective, favoring palatable grasses with higher caloric content. In the dry season, when fresh grasses become scarce, they adapt by consuming a broader range of available vegetation, including reeds, grains, and sometimes fruits and tree bark.

Digestive System Adaptations

Capybaras possess a specialized digestive system that enables them to efficiently process their fibrous, plant-based diet. They are hindgut fermenters, meaning that the majority of their plant digestion occurs in the latter part of their digestive tract, specifically in an enlarged cecum and colon. This large cecum, which can comprise a significant portion of their digestive tract’s volume, acts as a fermentation chamber where a diverse community of microbes breaks down tough plant materials like cellulose.

To maximize nutrient absorption from their fibrous diet, capybaras engage in a behavior known as coprophagy, or cecotrophy. This involves re-ingesting certain nutrient-rich fecal pellets, allowing the food to pass through their digestive system a second time. This re-digestion enables them to extract additional proteins and vitamins produced by the microbes in their hindgut, which might not have been absorbed during the initial passage. This adaptation is particularly important for obtaining sufficient nutrition from a diet that is often low in protein and high in fiber.
