Hydroquinone can cause side effects. Mild reactions include skin dryness, irritation, redness (erythema), and itching. It can also cause irritant contact dermatitis or allergic reactions. These effects diminish as the skin adjusts to the product.

More severe, though rare, side effects can occur with prolonged or high-concentration use. Ochronosis, a bluish-black or gray-blue discoloration of the skin, is a concern. Safe Application Practices

After 24 hours, check for any severe itching or irritation before applying it more broadly. The affected skin area should be clean and dry before applying a thin layer of the product, rubbing it in thoroughly.

Concentrations of hydroquinone vary, with 2% formulations available over-the-counter and higher strengths, such as 4%, requiring a prescription. Lower concentrations are suitable for mild hyperpigmentation, while higher concentrations are used for moderate to severe cases.

Wash hands thoroughly after application to prevent unintended lightening of the fingers. Consistent sun protection, including strong sunscreen, is important, as sun exposure can reverse lightening effects and worsen hyperpigmentation.

Continuous use should not exceed five months at a time. It is advisable to consult a dermatologist or healthcare professional before starting treatment, especially if you have sensitive skin or a medium-to-dark skin tone, as hydroquinone may worsen hyperpigmentation in some darker skin types.
