Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, increasing oxygen in the blood and tissues. This article describes common sensations and experiences individuals may have immediately after and in the hours following a session.
Immediate Sensations After Treatment
As individuals exit the hyperbaric chamber, they often notice a feeling of pressure equalization in their ears. This sensation is comparable to descending in an airplane or surfacing after a dive. A temporary fullness or gentle popping sounds can accompany this equalization, typically resolving within moments.
Some people might experience mild fatigue or slight lightheadedness upon standing after a session. This transient feeling is attributed to the body’s readjustment from the pressurized environment and usually subsides quickly as the body re-establishes equilibrium.
A feeling of warmth or mild sweating can occur immediately after treatment. This temporary physiological response dissipates minor heat accumulated during oxygen exposure. For others, enhanced mental clarity or increased alertness might be noted as the body processes the elevated oxygen.
Common Physical Experiences
A generalized sense of tiredness can develop in the hours following a hyperbaric session, potentially lasting for several hours or the remainder of the day. This fatigue is a common physiological response as the body integrates increased oxygenation. It reflects the metabolic work undertaken by cells.
Temporary changes in vision, such as slight blurring or increased nearsightedness, are sometimes reported. These visual shifts are transient and usually resolve within a few hours to a day. Any residual mild discomfort, fullness, or popping sensations in the ears or sinuses can also linger for a few hours.
A mild headache is another possibility, related to pressure changes or systemic effects of increased oxygen. This headache is generally not severe and often responds to rest and hydration. Conversely, many individuals report feeling more awake, energized, or mentally clear in the hours following treatment, especially after initial fatigue dissipates.
Managing Post-Treatment Sensations
Rest and adequate hydration are important to support the body’s recovery and alleviate post-treatment fatigue. Drinking water helps the body process physiological changes and maintain optimal cellular function. It is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activity immediately after a hyperbaric session, allowing the body time to readjust.
Communicate any sensations or concerns with the healthcare provider or hyperbaric staff. They can offer reassurance and guidance based on individual experiences. Most post-treatment sensations are mild and temporary, representing the body’s normal adaptation process.
While most sensations are expected, contact your provider if you experience severe pain, persistent ear or sinus issues that do not resolve, significant vision changes that do not improve, or any other unusual symptoms. This ensures unexpected responses are promptly addressed by a medical professional.
