To restrict the shrub’s lateral spread and encourage a compact shape, cut back the previous season’s growth by 30 to 50 percent. Many gardeners leave a woody framework of stems cut back to 18 to 24 inches for Panicle hydrangeas, providing structural support to prevent heavy blooms from causing new shoots to flop outward.
